Seven people, six children and one adult, were burned by ethanol-based lighter fluid at a skateboard event in Sønderborg on Saturday evening, DR reports.
“We received a call at 7.15pm about several young people having been burned in the harbour in Sønderborg in connection with a skateboarding event,” South Jutland and Sønderjylland police spokesperson Ole Aamann told DR.
Several ambulance helicopters were sent to the southern Danish town, taking the children to hospitals in Flensborg, Odense and Copenhagen where the children were treated for first- and second-degree burns.
None of the children received life-threatening burns, but three of the children are still in serious condition.
The children, aged between 12 and 14, were watching an event where the participants were skateboarding through a flaming hoop.
“At some point (the organisers) found that the fire had gone out, and they poured ethanol-based lighter fluid on it again. And thus, the fumes from the fluids caught fire,” Aamann said.
The police are now investigating whether the organisers had breached any regulations.
