Hefty beer prices are the most common gripe visitors have about the Bavarian drink-athon (other than tents that stink of stale sick). So it’s welcome news to all except the beer tent owners that the city of Munich has been granted permission to set a limit on the cost of a Mass.
On Monday the Bavarian anti-cartel agency decided that the city’s plan to cap prices at €10.70 up until 2019 was permissible.
The beer tent owners had furiously complained that the plan contravenes German competition laws.

The anti-cartel agency however told Munich that it would have to review the upper limit on beer prices every year based on turnover at the world’s biggest beer festival.
On May 9th Munich authorities will meet with the beer tent owners to discuss a number of new rules including the beer price cap.
The tent owners will also be told that they will have to bear the costs of increased security measures put in place after a series of terror attacks in 2016.
But it’s not all bad news for the booze merchants. Munich has decided to extend the festival by a day to give them a chance to earn a bit more cash. In 2017 the festival will end on a Monday evening instead of the traditional Sunday.
