The Schlafstrandkörbe (beach-sleeping baskets) created by the Mensch Foundation in Schleswig-Holstein, won the award of the “best touristic innovation” at the German Tourism Awards on Thursday evening, broadcaster NDR reports.
The award judges considered inventions potential profitability, environmental contribution and innovation in coming to their decision.
According to the tourism office in Schleswig-Holstein, the beachfront beds, which have been placed on beaches along the Baltic coast of Germany's northernmost state since June, are the first of their kind in the world.
Despite only being put onto the market this year, the beach-sleeping baskets are already attracting interest from as far abroad as China, a spokesperson for the tourism office in Schleswig-Holstein claimed.
Sizing in at 2.40 metres in width and 1.30 metres in height, they comfortably fit two people inside and are furnished with bedding and an abundance of pillows.
The beach beds are made in a workshop that employs disabled people. Each one costs between €29 and €90 a night and can be booked from 6pm until 10am the next day.
“It is like a hotel,” Charlotte Seipel, who rents out the sleeping baskets, told DPA.
“You need to put fresh linen in and make sure it is ready for the next guest.”
