Giuseppe Tassi, who edited Quotidiano Sportivo, was dismissed “with immediate effect” after running the headline in the wake of the three Italian athletes – Guendalina Sartori, Lucilla Boari and Claudia Mandia – narrowly missing a bronze medal at the Games on Monday.

The decision to run the headline was quickly lambasted by the president of the Italian Archery Federation, Mario Scarzella, as well as on social media networks.
“After the tears these girls poured overnight, this morning they suffered humiliation from the Italian press, instead of being supported,” Scarzella said in a statement.
The daily newspaper’s publisher, Riffeser Monti, apologised to the three archers and to readers.
