The summer storms are set to begin in the afternoon and continue through the night and into Thursday morning, Brittany in the west, through Normandy and up to the northern most tip of France.

The affected departments, marked in orange on the above map, are Calvados, Côtes-d'Armor, l'Eure, l'Ille-et-Vilaine, Loire-Atlantique, Manche, Mayenne, Morbihan, Nord, l'Orne, Pas-de-Calais, Seine-Maritime and Somme.

“These storms will be violent in places, accompanied by heavy rain (40 to 60mm), as well as sporadic strong gusts of wind and hail,” a Météo France bulletin predicted.

The weather forecasters also warned that the storms may cause “serious damage in places”.
