The ministry scrapped the condition that a student must specifically show “distress” before being issued the pill.
Health Minister Marisol Touraine said on Monday that the abolition of the “emergency and distress criteria” will make it quicker and easier for pupils to get their hands on the pill.
“All students should know that the door to the school nurse is open at all times, and that they don't need to have any kind of justification for entering,” she said.
The pill will now be given to a student by the school nurse regardless of her level of apparent distress with no regard to whether she qualifies as a minor or an adult.
The process is overseen by the school nurse and is both free and confidential, although the nurse should propose to a minor to consider meeting with someone of parental authority.
