Scheduled repairs are due to begin at 10pm on Wednesday and will end at 4pm on Sunday on the Lerum-Floda stretch near Gothenburg. This section of the western rail line, Sweden’s busiest rail artery, will be closed for the duration of the repairs.

Passengers traversing the country on Ascension Thursday, a public holiday, could find themselves hopping onto replacement buses, which the traffic administration says willl be put in place as he need arises throughout the weekend.

Railway workers will also switch out old rails between Alingsås-Floda and Lerum-Partille over the weekend, limiting traffic on these stretches to a single track.

“We recommend that passengers check with their rail operators before travelling,” transport administration spokesman Thomas Pihl told The Local.

Repair work will also affect trains plying the Stockholm to Västerås route.

Motorists have less to fear.

“There will be roadworks in some places but nothing major,” said Pihl.

There is light at the end of the rail tunnel though: Sweden looks set to bask in glorious holiday sun.
