The married couple is said to have accrued a six-figure haul after targeting banks in Lower Austria between 2014 and 2016 and managed to evade capture until Wednesday when they were seized by police.
The most recent bank robbery was carried out on March 25th in Ferschnitz, with previous incidents taken place in Viehdorf und Mauer-Öhling, the district of Amstetten, as well as Kemmelbach und St. Martin am Ybbsfeld.
It is not clear what exactly led to the police making an arrest this week.
The 43-year-old woman, who appeared to be the getaway driver in three of the robberies, has confessed to the robberies which the couple reportedly carried out to fund the husband’s drug habit.
The 41-year-old husband, who is suspected of carrying out the raids on the bank cashier desks, has only confessed to taking drugs.
“The evidence base is relatively strong,” says provincial police director Franz Prucher.
Masks, weapons and clothing believed to be used in the robberies were seized by authorities.
