The incumbent Prime Minister, whose conservative party suffered a huge blow in the general election on December 20th when it won the most seats but failed to win an absolute majority, was caught on camera at a party in the Galician town of Pontevedra.
Despite the fact that so far negotiations have failed to provide the stricken leader with support to form government, he put his worries aside and kicked up his heels at the party to see in 2016.
The video showing Spain’s prime minister busting some moves was uploaded onto Twitter and Youtube and soon went viral.
The public is well used to the dancing antics of his deputy, Soraya Saénz de Santamaría, who recently performed a choreographed dance on a prime time chat show, but it is a rare sight to see the 60 year-old bearded leader himself take to the floor.
The party was held in Pontevedra, in the northwestern region of Galicia, the city where Rajoy was punched in the face during a pre-election walkabout by a teenage relation of his wife.
The leader of the Popular Party was grooving to Spanish singer Raphael’s “Mi gran noche” but it is unlikely to prove to be a great start of the year for him as he faces a vote in Spain’s 350-seat parliament next week.
If he fails to win enough support to form a government then new elections will have to be called.
