Paramedics were sent up to the top of the tower to assist the overweight tourist, who was sightseeing in the Tuscan capital with his family.
According to Huffingtonpost.it, the tourist recovered somewhat at the top of the tower, but didn't regain enough strength to walk down its 414 stairs.
As a result, firemen were called to help the man descend from the tower by taking it in turns to carry him down using a paramedic's folding chair.
However, the descent was far from straightforward. The narrowness of the spiral staircase between the fourth and third floors of the tower meant that the man had to be transferred into a sling stretcher in order to descend further.
Nonetheless, the emergency services managed to get the man down the 85 meter-high tower in an impressive ten minutes.
Once in the square below the man was checked by medical staff before being taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
