“The order affects all members of the army in Europe from travelling to the indicated areas. Family members are also strongly requested to avoid these zones,” army spokespeople told Der Spiegel.
News of the travel ban came as the Munich administrative court overturned a ban on anti-G7 demonstrators camping in Garmisch-Patenkirchen.
The city has to put up with a camp of up to 1,000 activists.
Military spokespeople said that “there is a possibility that violence might be used… they're expecting thousands of protestors, including anti-globalization activists and others.”
Soldiers already stationed at the US barracks in Garmisch were told to avoid wearing their uniforms “so as to avoid any confrontation”, and to avoid any “unnecessary stops” while in vehicles.
“Avoid speaking English so loudly that you draw attention to yourselves,” the order read.
