The City of Copenhagen is auctioning off some 7,000 iconic street lamps, known simply as Copenhagen Lamps (Københavnerlamper), that have hung above city streets since the end of the 1970s.
The lamps will be sold in small batches over the course of the next six months via the auction house Lauritz. The city may also auction the lamps in Sweden and Germany if there is interest.
The old lamps began being replaced by energy-efficient replacements in November and will be completely gone by the end of 2015.
“The new street lamps give us an annual energy savings of 57 percent from 2016 onward, seen in comparison to 2010 levels. That corresponds to the annual energy consumption of 4,500 Copenhagen households,” a municipal spokesperson wrote on Facebook.
The City of Copenhagen has set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2025.
