Their daughter consumed the drug when she was under two years old, according to Spanish daily 20 minutos.

According to court documents, the couple, who have not been named, were regular cocaine users and started giving the drug to their daughter in April 2013, when she just seventeen months old.

The couple are facing eight years each in prison and will appear in court in the town of Albacete in south eastern Spain on Wednesday May 13th.

Spain is traditionally the main country of entry for drugs smuggling into Europe, with police seizures of the drug rising by a quarter in 2013, according to official figures.

Spaniards are becoming increasingly concerned about drugs. According to a study released at the end of 2014, 72.9 percent of Spaniards said that border controls needed to be beefed up compared to 43.5 percent in 2004.

The percentage of Spaniards who wanted stricter drug laws has also climbed over the last ten years from 48.1 percent to 70.3 percent.
