Under-25s in Calabria face a jobless rate of 59.7 percent – the seventh-highest unemployment figure out of all regions in the EU.
Puglia came two spots below, with youth unemployment at 58.1 percent in the southern Italian region, according to data from EU agency Eurostat.
The worst area in Europe to be a young jobseeker is Ipeiros, in Greece, where the figure stands at 69.8 percent.
Aside from Calabria and Puglia, regions in Greece and Spain dominated the bottom ten spots.
The second-highest youth jobless rate was 67.5 percent, found in Spain’s Ciudad Autónoma de Ceuta, followed by Andalucía with 61.5 percent.
Young Germans appeared to have little problem finding a job, with the country accounting for nine of the ten lowest unemployment rates. The figure stood at 3.7 percent in Oberbayern, 4.7 percent in Stuttgart and 4.8 percent in Karlsruhe.
Austria accounted for the only non-German region, with Tirol boasting a youth unemployment rate of six percent.
A closer look at the Italian regions showed the dire situation young jobseekers face across the country. The national youth employment rate stood at 42.7 percent, nearly twice the EU average of 21.9 percent.
Behind Calabria and Puglia came Sicily, with 57.0 percent, followed by the 56.0 percent recorded in southern Campania.
While the chance of finding a job proved significantly higher in the central and northern regions, youth unemployment recorded by Eurostat was still high.
The Veneto region had one of the lowest rates, at 27.6 percent, while Trento and Friuli-Venezia Giulia both recorded a 27.1 percent youth jobless rate.
A relatively remarkable exception was found in Bolzano, where unemployment among the under-25s was 12.4 percent.
