428,519 people were without jobs, an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the same time last year.
360,212 people registered as unemployed by the end of March – an increase of 12.9 percent compared to last year.
The number of people registered for retraining programmes at the AMS (Austrian job centre) decreased by 17.8 percent, to 68,307 people.
On the positive side, 14,000 people who were registered as unemployed in February found jobs in March.
Austria still has low unemployment compared to other EU member states. Figures released by Eurostat on Tuesday showed that the lowest unemployment rates in February were recorded in Germany (4.8 percent) and Austria (5.3 percent), and the highest in Greece (26.0 percent at the end of 2014) and Spain (23.2 percent).
Austria also has one of the lowest rates of youth unemployment, which at nine percent is the second lowest in the EU, behind Germany with 7.2 percent. The highest levels of youth unemployment are in Greece, Spain and Croatia.
