Over 300 people had to be evacuated from their homes on a street in a Naples suburb when a massive sinkhole opened up after heavy rain and a burst water pipe caused the road to cave in.

The 10-metre wide hole, captured in the video by Corriere Del Mezzogiorno. below, suddenly opened up on a street in Pianura on Sunday, although it started to appear a few days earlier due to ground subsidence.

Local authorities said a subsequent burst water pipe and heavy rain caused the ground to give way.

The incident led to the evacuation of 380 people from buildings nearby, Corriere reported.

This isn’t the first time a road has given way in Italy.

In early January, a €13 million viaduct in Sicily collapsed within ten days of opening.

Meanwhile, a truck driver toppled into a sinkhole that suddenly opened up in the heart of Rome in August last year.
