Childcare worker Trine Spjeldnæs from Barneslottet, a local daycare, said her staff would from now start checking all children's lunch boxes before they eat, stripping out all prohibited items.
”Kindergarten staff are becoming a kind of pack-lunch police, and I do not think that they want to be," she complained. "How can we know if a muffin is baked with bran and oatmeal or wheat flour and sugar?”
The borough has produced a brochure outlining the new guidelines. It recommends that the parents provide wholemeal bread and soup, instead of banned foods such as cocoa and hamburgers.
Elisabet Eggan, who is leading the pack lunch project stressed that children would not be deprived of food. ”If packed lunches are not in line with our recommendations, we will have a dialogue with the parents,” she said.
Rindal Holt, whose children go to school in the area said she found the new policy "odd".
“I’m glad that the day care is taking a grip on the health situation. It’s really important," she said. "But I find it odd that I will not be able to decide for myself what my daughter needs.”
