Hoeness walked out of jail on Friday, a spokesman for the Bayern justice minister said, although he is expected back in prison each night as part of his day-release programme.
Hoeness, 62, was found guilty of tax evasion in March 2014, having secretly stashed away funds in a Swiss bank account between 2003 and 2006 that would have been liable for nearly 30 million euros in tax.
The former Bayern player, and star of the 1974 German world-cup winning side, will be available for work during his daytime freedom, and the club, of which he was president, has made it clear it would like him to work with its youth team department.
With good behaviour, he can expect to be a free man as of 2016. Hoeness was also allowed to spend Christmas and New Year at home.
Despite his conviction, Hoeness is still a popular figure among Bayern fans, with stickers adorning lampposts around Munich pledging "Sulidarity" – a pun on his first name, adding that "Good friends are not forgotten."
