Starving kids abandoned in Spanish home

Police in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo have found three children, abandoned in a house and showing signs of malnourishment, prompting a nationwide search for their mother.

A baby, under one month old, as well as an 18 month old and a three year old, were found in a house after police were called by concerned neighbours.

Spanish police have now launched a national manhunt for the children’s mother, who has allegedly disappeared, abandoning her three children.

The three children all needed medical assistance after showing signs of malnutrition and are now under the protection of the local council in the region of Asturias, in northern Spain.

The search for the mother of the children is currently "at an impasse" according to local police who have little evidence to go on as the woman "does not have much family and those who have been questioned know nothing".

After an initial search of the local area proved fruitless, police widened their search to the whole of Spain and are not ruling out the possibility of moving the search to other countries as it is possible the mother has fled the country.

The police have said that it is "very strange" and that they do not have a clear line of inquiry, but are cautioning people against spreading rumours about the mother, who lived alone with her three children after the death of her partner.
