North enjoys record sun as capital goes grey

Sweden's Meteorological Institute (SMHI) announced the preliminary results on Sunday which made for grim, or should that be grey, reading for Stockholmers. 

"There's been five hours of sunshine up to and including Saturday," said Sandra Andersson, meteorologist with SMHI told the TT news agency, about Stockholm's grey month.

The previous record for the lowest amount of sunshine in the Swedish capital for November was eight hours back in 2000.

Down south it has been a similar story with parts of the region enduring its darkest November in decades. Växjö was on course to smash its record low of five sunshine hours from 1993 but the sun put in an appearance over the last few days.

SMHI said that Växjö has now clocked up eight hours of sunshine in total for November.

Up north it has been a much brighter story with parts of the country basking in record hours of sunshine.

"In Kiruna it has come up to 42 hours of sunshine for the month. The old record from 2008 stood at 40 hours," added Andersson.

Even Kiruna couldn't compete with Storlien, which is on the Swedish-Norwegian border, which clocked up 52 hours of sunshine while Luleå had 37 hours.
