The autopsy stated the body found on Friday in the waters in Sogndal was Veronica Heggheim Stegegjerdet, a Norwegian student who had been missing for over three weeks.

Sogndal sheriff, Asle Karoliussen, said: “We have confirmation it was Veronica Heggheim Stegegjerdet who was found dead on Friday. Next to kin has been informed.”

The body was found inBarsnesfjorden around 1.30pm on Friday afternoon by a person taking a walk.

On Saturday an autopsy was made of the woman at Gades Institute in Bergen. It was confirmed it was Stegegjerdet who had been found at the shore. The cause of death, or whether anything criminal has happened, is still unknown.

The young woman was last seen alive at her own apartment in Årøy in Sogndal, where she lived alone, on Saturday the 25th of October. Three days later she was reported missing after not meeting up at a scheduled meeting in the centre of Sogndal.

Several searches had been made in the area after the 22-year-old was reported missing, without results. Police had used a sonar vessel and a mini-submarine to serach Barsnesfjord.

The investigation will continue to determine the cause of death.
