VIDEO: Immigration centre attacked in Rome

Around 50 people clashed with police on Tuesday night, in the second evening of unrest outside the Tor Sapienza immigration centre.

With their faces and heads covered, people threw homemade bombs at the police and set bins and cars on fire. Immigrants reportedly responded by throwing objects from the windows of the centre in east Rome.

A policeman and another man were injured and taken to hospital, Rai News said.

A video capturing the skirmishes shows a group of riot police following men down the street before the two groups clash.

In footage shot later the same evening, an abandoned knife can be seen lying in the street and a police car with its window smashed.

Riot police had been brought in on Tuesday after stones were thrown at the centre and bins outside set ablaze the previous evening.

Tommaso Ippoliti, the president of the local Tor Sapienza Committee, said the latest violence demonstrated the worsening situation in the area.

“This neighbourhood has been abandoned for years, you can’t go out at night and recently there’s been an increase in violence and thefts…people are exasperated. We’re asking for more security,” he told Rai News.
