A 50-year-old man had posted on an internet listings platform that he was interested in buying a motorboat. He was contacted by a man who said he had a boat to sell and they agreed to meet in a cemetery in Kapfenberg.

When the man and his wife and five-year-old daughter arrived at the agreed meeting place on Sunday afternoon the seller immediately drew a gun and demanded the money.

The 50-year-old put his car into reverse gear and drove away as fast as he could, but not before the suspect had fired a tear gas cartridge into the passenger seat and then at the back of the car as it sped away. He then ran off through the cemetery.

The family was unhurt, but traumatised by the incident.

The suspect is described as around 20 to 30 years old, 1.75 metres tall, with short brown hair. He is believed to be Austrian.

At the time of the attempted robbery he was wearing aviator sunglasses and a white jacket.

A similar ambush happened in June in the Kapfenberg cemetery when three men went to buy a car that had been advertised on the internet for €40,000.

A man, believed to be the same offender, threatened them with a gun and took the cash.
