CATALONIA CRISIS

‘Barça won’t play La Liga if Catalonia leaves Spain’

The president of the Spanish Football Federation (LFP) warned on Tuesday that FC Barcelona and other Catalan teams will no longer be able to play in Spain’s leagues if the region becomes independent.

“Barcelona and Espanyol won’t play in the Spanish League if Catalonia becomes independent,” LFP President Javier Tebas told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

“Spain’s Sports Act states that the only country that can play in the Spanish league and other official Spanish competitions is Andorra,” Tebas said.

The Costa Rican-born lawyer stated that the only way Barça and Espanyol could play in La Liga would be if the Parliament approved a legal change and the Spanish professional football sector agreed to that change as well.”
