Beni Meier’s giant squash plant tipped the scales at 953.5 kilograms to set the new record, according to the Jucker Farm, which organizes the competition at an event venue in the village of Jona, overlooking Lake Zurich.
Organizers said Meier was the first non-American to set a world record for the biggest pumpkin in the “Swiss championship” weigh-in.
The trophy plant was displayed, under guard, and Meier from Pfungen, in the canton of Zurich, posed for pictures next to it.
Last year, Meier entered an even larger pumpkin, weighing 1053.5 kilograms, buts it was disqualified because it had a hole in it, the SDA news agency reported.
UPDATE: Meier broke his own record on Sunday, October 12th with another pumpkin weighing 1,054 tonnes at the European pumpkin competition at Ludwigsburg, Germany.
The huge gourd, measuring 5.72 metres in circumference, set a new world and European record, SDA reported.
