The woman, who is a resident in the Montenero neighbourhood of Livorno on the Western coast of Tuscany, stored her pension of €560 in an old biscuit tin after collecting the banknotes from the post office, La Repubblica reported.
But unfortunately the biscuit tin was no obstacle for the hungry mice that had taken up residence in the pensioner’s home.
It was only when the pensioner’s grandson came to visit and she decided to give him some money that she discovered the damage.
Horrified, the woman appealed to the Bank of Italy who told her that, while the bank notes were unusable, they could be replaced free of charge by the bank.
The city’s pest control service AAMPS has since taken care of the rodent infestation and the woman has now been persuaded to open a bank account.
