Record tourist numbers for Austria despite rain

Despite a disappointing summer, the coolest since 2005, Austria had record tourist numbers from May to July, with 31.9 million overnight stays.

Almost 10 million guests holidayed in Austria during the summer months, an increase of 2.6 percent according to Statistik Austria.

It was the best tourist season since 1995, with May and June especially strong, although a rainy July attracted 4.9 percent fewer guests than June.

A sharp decline in the number of overnight stays by German tourists (down 11.9 percent) was due to the summer holidays starting later, at the end of July, for ten German states.

The most popular Austrian province for tourists was Tyrol, with around 8.3 million overnight stays. Vienna saw the largest increase (5.7 percent) in tourist numbers, with around 3.8 million visitors. Carinthia was the only province with a decline in numbers, of 4.7 percent.

According to Statistik Austria the trend since January is that there are more tourists visiting, but they are staying for a shorter time.
