Madrid airport staff to strike in late August

AENA staff called off their initial strike for August 15th and 17th but have now decided to hold it from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st.

CGT-Aena, the trade union representing the disgruntled airport workers, has sent out out a press release arguing that their call for negotiations with Spain’s Ministry of Public Works and Barajas authorities had fallen on deaf ears.

Last June, Spain's government announced it had agreed to sell a 49-percent stake in the state-owned airport operator, a move CGT argues will put the country’s tourism industry “at great risk” and have a “negative impact” on flight security.

The group claims they fear jobs, especially temporary ones, may be lost under private management and demand that Spain’s airports remain “financially, and socially sustainable”.

According to Spanish news agency Europa Press, Barajas airport staff have announced they will strike from 3pm to 8pm on the 29th and from 7am to 10am and then 8pm to 12pm on Sunday 31st.

Saturday’s strike hours have not yet been officially confirmed.
