Copenhagen landslide leads to evacuation

A building near Copenhagen’s Nørrebro Station was evacuated on Tuesday night after a landslide under a Metro construction workplace. 

 

“In connection with the construction, a building sunk as a result of a landslide, so we determined it was necessary to evacuate,” Copenhagen Police spokesman Mads Firlings told Ritzau news agency. 

 

According to Politiken, the building sunk by roughly one centimeter, which was enough for authorities to decide that it posed a potential hazard. 

 

Some 51 residents were evacuated from the building, which sits on Folmer Bendtsens Square in Nørrebro. 

 

A spokesperson for contractor Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT) told Politiken that the building was stable as of Wednesday morning but residents were still not allowed to approach it. 

 

“We discovered on Tuesday night that water had been pushed into the shaft. We immediately worked to stop that. Since we didn’t have a full overview of the situation, we decided in cooperation with police and the fire department to evacuate the building as a precaution,” CMT spokesman Jens Munch told Politiken.
