The Norwegian flight from Stockholm's Arlanda airport bound for New York was cancelled on Monday morning.
The company reported that the plane, which was scheduled to take off on Sunday afternoon, was hit by a bolt of lightning and left grounded due to a resulting "technical problem".
Passengers were left fuming.
One American took to Twitter to voice his disdain about being left in "travel limbo" when Norwegian refused to send the passengers on another airline.
He added that he had been told that a replacement flight won't be available until Friday.
A spokesperson for the airline told the Aftonbladet newspaper that planes were built to take lightning strikes, but that the company "wasn't taking any chances" this time around.
