Rape and violence mar Norwegian music festival

Police charged one person for rape and are investigating four other sex attacks at a top music festival in Norway over the weekend.

Local police made 16 arrests in total at the country music event which ran from 23rd to 26th July in Seljbord, Telemark. The Seljbord Country Festival had an attendance of 25,000 people over four days and features some of the world's best country acts.

A man in his early twenties from Bergen was charged by police for raping a woman, but is denying the charge. Four other arrests for rape were also made and there were three cases of violence reported against festival security guards.

Th first reported rape happened on Friday night, the second attack was Saturday and the final two rapes on Sunday evening, reported "NRK". All the attacks took place inside the festival area.

Police chief Torodd Aase said: “All four women are in their twenties and from different parts of Norway. They have been at the rape incident ward at Telemark hospital and they have been examined.”

The hot weather was blamed for increased drunkenness and incidents.

The festival featured the best of Norwegian and international country music.
