Eastern Europeans boost housing market

Ukrainians and Poles are buying houses in Denmark like never before, estate agents report.

 

In mid and central Jutland, southern Zealand and the southern islands of Lolland-Falster – areas that have long struggled with declining populations – house sales are on the rebound thanks to a large number of buyers from eastern Europe. 

 

Estate agent Ingvard Frandsen in the Jutland town of Vildbjerg told public broadcaster DR that as many as one out of every four homebuyers in the area this year have been from either Poland or Ukraine. 

 

“We have been incredibly happy to find buyers for the 1970s style villa houses,” he said. 

 

The majority of the foreign homebuyers are relatively young and have lived and worked in Denmark for five to seven years. 

 

“Immigrants are just as well represented in the housing market today as Danes,” Jan Nordmann, a spokesperson for estate agency EDC, told DR.
