Norway fan wins big on Suarez bite bet

A Norwegian football fan has cashed in a cool 5,600 kroner ($900) on a 32 kroner bet, after making a prescient wager that Uruguay striker Luis Suarez would take a bite out of someone at the World Cup in Brazil.

Suarez's 'biteyness' is a well-known phenomenon:  he has twice been caught taking a chunk out of an opponent on the field. (See howmanypeoplehasluissuarezbitten.com for details.)

So, according to this Norwegian football blog from June 9, the Swedish betting company Betsson started offering bets on whether the  Liverpool forward would once again wrap his chompers around another player.

"Vil Luis Suarez bite en annen spiller?", or 'Will Luis Suarez bite another player?' was top of the list of wacky bets the blog cited as being offered by Betsson.

When contacted by The Local, Betsson said that a total of 167 punters from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and elsewhere had taken them up on the bet, getting generous odds of 175/1 for their high-risk wager.

Amazingly, their bet came good when Suarez appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on Tuesday night.

"We lost a six figure amount in Norwegian kroner," Betsson spokesman Mikael Mellqvist told The Local. "Now the new bets are on how long a suspension Suarez will get, and whether another player will also bite someone in this World Cup".

Among the winners was Thomas Syverson from Trondheim, who made the bet in the betting slip released over Twitter, and Ruben Gabrielsen, a player for Norway's Lillestrøm SK team, who on Tuesday claimed on Twitter to have made 3,500 kroner on the bet, posting the betting slip to his followers.

"I know that there are many who have lost a lot of money on the World Cup, but if you guess like me, you win!" he tweeted.

According to Betsson, the biggest winner was an unnamed Norwegian man, who walked away with wins of more than 20,000 kroner ($3,300).

Low cost airline Norwegian has registered a loss of 14.9 billion Norwegian kroner for 2020, a year in which the company saw a drastic reduction in passenger numbers and was on the brink of bankruptcy.

The company published its annual results on Friday, revealing the huge operating loss.

Norwegian’s 2019 result, a loss of around 1.7 billion kroner, had put the company in a difficult position even prior to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus outbreak and its consequent travel restrictions reduced the company’s passenger numbers to 6.9 million in 2020. That is 29 million fewer than in 2019.

Not all of the loss is due to fewer passengers. Around half of the company’s devaluation is attributed to a depreciation of the value of its aircraft fleet, news wire Ritzau reports.

“2020 was an exceptionally demanding year for air travel and for Norwegian,” CEO Jacob Schram said in a statement on the annual results.

“In light of that, the result for the fourth quarter (of 2020) is not surprising. Unfortunately, the majority of our employees are furloughed and many have lost their jobs – in part because of the closure of long distance services,” he added.

The company was already in debt prior to the pandemic and is now under bankruptcy protection in Ireland and is undergoing similar process in Norway.
