The prosecutor of Vibo Valentia, in Italy’s Calabria region, launched the probe following a request from the baby’s parents, Rai News reported.

Investigators have reportedly seized medical files as they begin to investigate how the baby boy died after his mother gave birth by cesarean section at the city’s Jazzolino hospital.

As part of the probe an autopsy will be carried out on Wednesday, Rai News said.

Elsewhere in southern Italy, a couple is suing the local health authority after a maternity ward sent them home with the wrong baby. After realizing they had a baby boy, they were promptly reunited with their newborn daughter, although the couple then decided to sue the authorities for €50,000 in compensation.
