During a routine border check of a station wagon towing a defective vehicle on a trailer, police in Nickelsdorf, Burgenland near the border with Hungary made an interesting discovery.
The back of the car, from which the back seat had been removed, contained six adult and four juvenile sheep.
The sheep were being transported without any food or water.
The man was taking the animals to Romania, and had been driving for five hours from the municipality of Berghausen in Germany, where he claimed to have bought them.
The sheep were taken to a veterinarian, where they were given food and water. Police will look after them while inquiries continue.
