An avalanche on Thursday hit Italy's north-west Piedmont region, leaving one alpine skier dead and three others injured.

Enrico Cerro, 33, was skiing on Ciamarella mountain in the Lanzo Valleys when he was swept away by the avalanche.

Another skier, who was buried by the snowfall, was found an hour later and airlifted to hospital in Turin with a dislocated shoulder and a fractured pelvis, La Repubblica reported.

Cerro had already died when he was discovered by rescuers some time later, the newspaper said.

Two others were injured in the avalanche, although escaped being buried in the snow, and were taken to hospital with one suffering from a fractured femur and the other a broken ligament.
