Cameron and his family will be spending the holiday in the resort of Playa Blanca at the island's southern tip.

"I'll to be spending a bit of time with my mother-in-law," he said. "I think I am spending Easter Day with (my wife) Samantha's family," the UK leader told BBC radio recently.

The arrival of the prime minister is yet another sign of low-rise Lanzarote's growing popularity among Brits.

Arrivals at Lanzarote's Arrecife airport were up nearly a quarter in the first two months of the year, after a 2013 in which the island saw its best tourist figures in over a decade.

January and February saw a total of 321,191 foreign tourists visit Lanzarote, with the British — the island´s largest market — accounting for almost half of all arrivals.

The prime minister's trip to low-rise Lazarote follows on from other Spanish family trips to Mallorca and Granada.

Another trip to Ibiza in May 2013 was criticized by British tabloids for coming hot on the heels of the murder of a British soldier by two suspected extremists.
