Norway artist develops seagull drone

This is not a seagull, but a work of art. Norwegian artist Anders Eiebakke has disguised a camera drone as a seagull, as part of his work warning of increasing surveillance.

Anders Eiebakke has used his seagull drone to film heavily-guarded places, such as the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla, and one of Norway's Royal palaces, arguing that as he is filming in the name of art, he is not violating anyone's privacy and does not need to apply for permission.

"I work with art and not surveillance," he told Norway's NRK channel. "Had the latter been interesting, I would have bought myself a camera with a telephoto lens."

"Every day, drone technology is used to terrorize the civilian populations of Gaza, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia. It is used in the wrong way by the wrong hands," he explained. "I want to take part in the discussion about the technology."

"We must be cognizant about how this technology is used. We must have proper focus on this. It's about how we organize ourselves together as a society and how we use new technology," he said.

With its sheer cliffs and tumbling waterfalls, it’s easy to see why this truly awesome valley in the Bernese Oberland inspired Tolkien’s Rivendell.
