Greens reclaim status from Sweden Democrats

A new opinion poll has found that Sweden's Green Party would edge the anti-immigration party the Sweden Democrats into fourth place if Swedish voters were to head to the ballot box now.

Pollsters United Minds interviewed 1,098 people between February 10th and March 9th about which party they would support if elections were held now.

The survey, published in the Aftonbladet newspaper on Monday, found that the centre-right coalition trailed the red-green bloc by 12.7 percentage points. The crisis-ridden Centre Party gained some support, however, while the two remaining coalition partners to the main conservative party the Moderates fell back somewhat.

A potential centre-left coalition led by the opposition Social Democrats would claim 50.3 percent of the votes, the poll found.

The main headline grabber, however, was the Green Party reclaiming its status as Sweden's third largest party from the Sweden Democrats, which had soared in opinion polls in recent months but now garnered 9.4 percent of the vote. The Greens pulled in 10.4 percent of the polled voters' support.

Aftonbladet noted that the poll put the Sweden Democrats at their lowest popularity level since 2012.
