Fare dodger flees into tunnel to escape fine

A fare dodger who was stopped by ticket inspectors on the Berlin U-Bahn on Thursday morning escaped by jumping onto the tracks and running down a tunnel, delaying all trains in the area.

The man was stopped by at Oranienburger Tor station in the centre of the city.

But rather than paying the €40 fine for travelling without a ticket, he fled into a tunnel towards Friedrichstraße and escaped.

Power had to be cut off to deactivate all trains in that section, causing a delay from 9.18 to 9.38, rail authority spokesman Petra Reetz told the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper.

And if authorities catch up with the daredevil fare dodger, he could be held responsible for both the costs of the train interruption and for "dangerous intrusion in the public transit system".
