The annual German Tourism Analysis report, which is in its 30th year, showed that in 2013 Germany was by far the most popular holiday location among those who lived there – nearly half of the 3,000 people asked said they took their main break there.
Spain came second, but was way behind, with only one in eight heading west for Sangria and sunshine.
Nearly 60 percent of the 4,000 people asked took a holiday for longer than five days in 2013. On average, a trip cost €1,063.

Southern Germany was the most popular holiday destination, broadcaster N24 reported, with the Black Forest and Lake Constance firm favourites. Also popular was the Baltic coastline in the north.
The report's authors said they expected Germany to remain the most popular destination for Germans in 2014, with people continuing to stay closer to home rather than fly somewhere more exotic.
