Engadine luxury hotel rated world’s best

The five-star hotel in Pontresina, in the Engadine region, is ranked tops in the 2014 Travelers’ Choice awards, determined by reviews of people who stayed there.

“Few hotels seamlessly blend old-world charm and modern conveniences as well as the Kronenhof,” TripAdvisor says on its website, quoting one gushing review.

“The property is as impressive as the surrounding mountains.”

Built in the late-19th century in the neo-Baroque style, the luxury hotel offers panoramic views of the Bernina glaciers and Engadine mountains.

Fully renovated, it features a 2,000-square-metre spa featuring a lavish pool with windows looking out on the peaks.

It also has a Michelin Star gourmet restaurant.

The Grand Hotel Kronenhof was named as hotel of the year in 2008 by Gault Millau.

Guests who reviewed the hotel rated it highly for its sleep quality, location, rooms, service and cleanliness.

When it came to value, the rating just fell short of top marks — the cheapest room on a weekend in early February is advertised at €487 a night.

But not everyone was bowled over by the service.

One reviewer who stayed there in December complained of cold water (the management responded by offering a bottle of champagne) and poor food (a view apparently not shared by the Michelin inspector).
