An illegal Russian fish cartel has colluded with regulatory authorities to shut Norwegian exporters out of their country's giant seafood market, a report from Russia's competition authorities has concluded.

According to the report, Russia's veterinary agency Rosselkhoznadzor has been working in in league with Russian importers and producers to block Norwegian fish by claiming to find large quantities of bacteria in Norwegian deliveries.

In recent weeks, Norwegian exporters have seen consignments of cod, pollock, herring and mackerel refused due to their high bacterial content, a problem they have experienced since at least 2006.

"The measures from Rosselkhoznadzor were related to agreements between its management on one side and the Importer Association and the participants in the cartel on the other side," the report said.

The Russian Competition Authority's report noted that the agency had been unable to produce laboratory samples proving that the Norwegian fish had not met Russian quality standards.

Arne Aarhus, the head of the Norwegian salmon exporter Ocean Quality, told Norway's DN newspaper that two Russian importers pressured him to sign exclusive contracts with their companies.

"It was said to us that if we signed contracts, we would never get problems with the Russian veterinary authority. On the other hand, if we didn't sign these agreements, the results of laboratory analyses would prove to be "bad", and export of products from our factories to Russia would be subject to a ban," he said.

Russia announces no New Year’s greetings for France, US, Germany

US President Joe Biden, France's Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will not be receiving New Year's greetings from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin said on Friday.

Russia announces no New Year's greetings for France, US, Germany

As the world gears up to ring in the New Year this weekend, Putin sent congratulatory messages to the leaders of Kremlin-friendly countries including Turkey, Syria, Venezuela and China.

But Putin will not wish a happy New Year to the leaders of the United States, France and Germany, countries that have piled unprecedented sanctions on Moscow over Putin’s assault on Ukraine.

“We currently have no contact with them,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“And the president will not congratulate them given the unfriendly actions that they are taking on a continuous basis,” he added.

Putin shocked the world by sending troops to pro-Western Ukraine on February 24.

While Kyiv’s Western allies refused to send troops to Ukraine, they have been supplying the ex-Soviet country with weapons in a show of support that has seen Moscow suffer humiliating setbacks on the battlefield.
