Roma camp to be evicted ‘before the snow’

On Thursday morning officers from Oslo's Enforcement Office hung up a notice outside the camp informing the residents of their impending eviction. 

 

"They will now get a message that they should remove themselves from the area. We encourage them to bring all their belongings. What is left behind will be thrown away,"  Birthe Pihl, the acting head of the office, told NRK. "It will be convenient if we can get this done before the snow falls." 

 

Cecilie Schjatvet, a lawyer hired by the charity Folk er Folk to represent the Roma, said that she intended to appeal to Norway's Supreme Court to prevent the eviction going ahead. 

 

Statsbygg, the state property body which owns the site, won a case in Oslo City Court to have the Roma evicted.
