"I have received an offer to take over a party," he said, offering no further details.
The statement comes after Sandberg said that those who thought his political career was over were in for a surprise.
Sandberg's strong anti-Islamic and anti-immigration rhetoric, which helped energise the Progress Party's roots while it was in opposition, is less welcome now the party is in government.
Sandberg has received no ministerial position in the new government and last week announced that he was stepping down as deputy leader.
Vegard Martinsen, the leader of Norway's Liberal People's Party, denied rumours that Sandberg would take over from him, saying that only one party – the Democrats in Norway – would make a good fit.
"The only party in which he would fit is the Democrats of Norway, because Mr Sandberg's opinions and views fit with that party, more than with the Progress Party."
The Democrats in Norway, the most right-wing of Norway's major parties, were not available to comment when contacted by The Local.
