The landlord returned to the apartment in the Santa Barbara district to check everything was in order for his next tenant after the former one, an elderly lady, had left, Il Messaggero reported.
He might not have expected a pristinely clean flat but he got a shock when he opened the freezer and saw the cats, some of which were kittens, crammed together inside.
Police are now on the hunt for the woman, who could potentially be charged for mistreating animals if she’s unable to explain how the cats ended up in the freezer.
Il Messaggero reported that police are not ruling out the theory that the cats could have been frozen as part of a spooky Halloween event or that the plan was to use them to feed exotic animals, such as pythons.
