The creature ran wild around Maikammer village centre on Saturday morning, attacking at least four people, police confirmed.
One of the victims was a 62-year-old woman, who fell foul of the marten as she was leaving a clothes shop. It sprung on her, biting her in the leg and twice on the ribs. She had to be taken to hospital.
It then attacked a 53-year-old woman. “It bared its teeth. I managed to ward it off with my basket and it bit it hard,” she told the Bild newspaper.
A florist then came to try and drive the animal away with a broom. But the marten was not intimidated. “I had my hands full trying to keep it away from me,” the 58-year-old told the newspaper.
A second shop owner then came out and killed the animal with a broom. The dead animal was due to be examined by a vet on Monday.
