The 47-year-old cobbler allegedly threw the glue, used to fix shoes, over his wife’s face on Sunday evening, Venezia Today reported. The motive for the attack in Vigonovo, Venice province, remains unknown.

The attacker fled the shoe workshop on foot, while relatives of the 36-year-old woman were alerted by her screams.

The nature of the industrial glue made it difficult to douse the flames, Corriere della Sera said.

The victim was taken first to a local hospital before being transferred to the burns unit of a Padua hospital. She suffered serious burns to her face and chest.

Her husband has been accused of attempted murder, Venezia Today said. Between January and June this year 82 women were killed by men in Italy, according to the CGIL trade union.
