Staff at the Torre del Gallo prison, in the northern Pavia area, were shocked to find that robbers had successfully carried out a heist in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The thieves – who are yet to be caught – broke into an office close to the prison cells and escaped with €6,000 worth prisoners’ cash, which had been kept in a safe, La Stampa reported.
But prison Director Iolanda Vitale said the prisoners will not go short, the newspaper said.
Eugenio Sarno, general secretary of the prison workers’ union UILPA Penitenziari, told The Local he think there were at least three or four thieves involved.
It is unknown how they were able to walk in and out of the prison undetected by security.
“An investigation has been launched; at this stage we are unable to say whether any prison guards were involved,” Sarno said.
The break-in comes just a month after a criminal escaped from Torre del Gallo.
Gjoke Aroni, 23, climbed over the prison wall on August 11th, but was rearrested a few hours later, La Stampa said.
