Swedish diver finds dismembered body

A diver in southern Sweden has discovered a package containing a dismembered body, with police stating those responsible for dumping the package most likely thought they'd gotten away with "the perfect crime".

“It’s the kind of thing that you think you could only see on TV,” Björ Blixter of the Gothenburg police told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

“But it happens every now and again that someone dumps a body in this way. It’s not often, but it happens.”

The body was found 14 metres below the water surface in Saltö, outside of Strömstad, on the west coast of Sweden near the Norwegian border.

It remains unclear who the body belongs to, or how long it has been on the seabed, but police have confirmed that the packaging was “well made”.

“It was done in a manner that shows the body was not meant to be found,” Blixter said. “It’s a coincidence that someone was even diving 14 metres. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been found unless a fisherman snagged it on a hook. It was probably thought to be the perfect crime.”

Police have launched an investigation together with Norwegian officials, and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Results from a forensic examination are expected on Wednesday.
